Is it possible to remove tartar from teeth naturally? Tartar is also known as “tartar” or “tartar”. It almost always consists of the hardening of bacterial plaque on the tooth surface due to poor oral hygiene. This dirt can appear below the gum line, on teeth and fillings or other dental work. If not removed properly, it can spoil the enamel and lead to ailments such as caries. Since its accumulation is frequent, many people are looking for solutions to eliminate it naturally. However, removing it is not so simple. Although there is a wide variety of home remedies that promise to help, the truth is that professional intervention is required. Below, we tell more about this.

What is it and why does dental tartar occur?

As detailed in an article published in the Journal of the Indian Society of Periodontology, tartar on the teeth is a calcified mass that usually forms in the areas of the mouth where there is a constant supply of saliva. To be more precise, it is mineralized dental plaque, which is formed due to the growth of bacteria and the accumulation of food residues. This, in general, is constantly removed with a good brushing. However, if there are no good hygiene habits or if it accumulates excessively, it causes tartar. In most cases, this is appreciated as a sticky, clay-like film of a whitish-yellow color. Tartar, also called dental calculus or tartar, is the product of the mineralization of bacterial plaque. Plaque consists of a mixture of saliva, food residues… and the bacterial colonies that feed them. These pathogens are responsible for caries and periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis or “pyorrhea”), two of the most common oral problems in the general population…. and if you follow proper hygiene and minimal checks in the clinic, then in the vast majority of cases it can be prevented. The plaque is invisible, but when it begins to accumulate a film of mineral substances (usually calcium and phosphorus salts) on it, it acquires the characteristic brown or yellowish tint of tartar.

How to remove tartar?

Although tartar formations are usually caused by poor oral hygiene, once formed, they cannot be removed by ordinary brushing or any other treatment that the patient can apply at home. Despite the many remedies and tips on the Internet, there is only one way to “get rid” of tartar . For dental calculus cleaning, the patient needs to go to a dental clinic and do oral cleaning or oral hygiene with a more suitable tongue. They are also called tartrectomy in Dentistry, as they are the only method of removing tartar or tartar . In these procedures, which do not require anesthesia, a hygienist equipped with a non-rotating handpiece called an ultrasound tip cleans the visible enamel layer of the teeth and tartar located just below the gum line. Oral cleaning, contrary to popular belief, are completely painless treatments that do not erode tooth enamel. Dentists recommend one to two cleanings a year, especially for patients who are more prone to tooth decay or periodontal disease, such as pregnant women or people with diabetes or other systemic diseases. To remove the tartar that has deepened under the soft tissues that support the teeth, a different treatment is required, called scaling and root correction or, more commonly, curettage, which requires local anesthesia.
